Abstract
The paper analyzes the results of long-term studies performed by specialists of scientific centres
and academies in the northern regions of Russia. The obtained data give a thorough understanding
of northern stress (“polar stress syndrome”) development in humans and its mechanisms under
constant extreme climatic and geophysical conditions of high latitudes. This syndrome accelerates
the depletion of adaptive reserves and causes a number of maladaptive disorders, and, as a result,
chronic conditions. This insight into the mechanisms of northern stress as well as detection of
previously unknown processes of human adaptation and maladjustment in the North, allowed us to
better understand the development of hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic obstruction lung
disease, gastrointestinal disturbances, hepatopathies, diseases of the nervous, immune and endocrine
systems as well as reproductive disorders in people who had previously lived in the North. In conclusion,
the authors suggest the ways to preserve human health in the North.
