Abstract
This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of the main somatometric parameters in children
and adolescents living in Arkhangelsk and Moscow who were examined in the 1960s, 1980s and 2010s.
We showed that over the 20 years’ period (from the 1960s to 1980s) there had been a significant increase
in the total body size of the child population in these cities, which indicates an intense acceleration process
typical of the vast majority of the child population both within Russia and all over the world. What is more, the
child population of Arkhangelsk showed over the same study period a significant increase in the mean values
of body weight in all age and gender groups. Having studied the yearly increase in body length and weight
as well as age periods of growth spurts, we came to the conclusion that the onset of biological maturation of
modern children and adolescents has shifted forward, which is also a sign of acceleration. Currently, there
have been observed multidirectional trends in the parameters of child and adolescent physical development in
Northern Russia. We identified a group of schoolchildren aged 8–10 years with reduced physical development
which requires careful monitoring in order to preserve and improve their health. A comparative analysis of
physical development in children and adolescents living in Moscow and Arkhangelsk during the compared
periods has revealed that boys and girls from Moscow were ahead of their Arkhangelsk peers in terms of
key somatometric parameters in most age groups both in the 1960s and in the 2010s, which confirms the
necessity of establishing and regularly reviewing regional standards of physical development.
