Abstract

The climatic and geographical conditions in the European North of Russia form a specific state of health and pathology requiring high functional and adaptive potential of the body. The working environment of pulp and paper industry exacerbates the adverse action of the natural factors on the endocrine status of the population. In this regard, the socio-medical significance of evaluating and preventing the consequences of the combined effects of natural and production factors in industrialized territories continues to grow. In the North, the body’s homeostatic regulation leads to the activation of the thyroid system. This article presents the results of comparative studies on the content of thyroxin-binding globulin, thyroid hormones and their ratio in the blood of Arkhangelsk residents not working in industries with adverse factors and employees of the pulp and paper mill. The periods of 1989–1990 and 2009– 2012 were investigated. It is demonstrated here that over the twenty-year period, changes occurred in the thyroid hormones profile and ratios in the male population of the city of Arkhangelsk, i.e. the peripheral conversion of iodothyronines increased against the background of a general decrease in the concentrations of thyroid hormones and their transporter in those examined in 2009–2012. At the same time, employees of the pulp and paper mill have higher levels of serum thyroxine and lower concentrations of triiodothyronine, thyroxin-binding globulin, and ratio of iodothyronines compared with men not involved in industries with extreme working conditions, regardless of the year of research.
